ARTICULATE:
The “articulate” portion of SBL is where it all begins. As a teacher, we must decide what we want our students to know, understand, and be able to do, and it is essential that we communicate this effectively with our students. We need to provide students with clear learning targets, so they know the goal of their learning. I like to think of it as a clear destination on a long (or sometimes short) road trip. Students know where they are supposed to end up before they begin their journey which avoids them roaming around aimlessly hoping they will reach their destination before they run out of gas!
For SBL to be effective, the learning targets and scales need to be re-visited again and again. We don’t just hand them out at the beginning of the unit, but rather refer to them frequently, if not daily. We use them to develop lessons, provide feedback, and ultimately provide a “grade.” They really become the basis for all that comes next in the cycle of SBL.
